Varsity Field Hockey Races to 4-1

The St. Francis Varsity field hockey team has gotten off to a great start behind an entirely new coaching staff.  The Wyverns are currently 4-1 overall and were one goal short of making the Apple Tournament Championship in their only loss.

St. Francis opened the season with a solid victory on the road against Seneca, winning 8-0.  The game was never in doubt as the Wyverns saw five player score at least one goal.  Junior Hanna Cobb pulled off the hat trick in the victory.

Goals - Cobb (3), Milliken (2), Donovan, Jones, Team; Saves - McClain (3)

On Monday the Wyverns start play in the Apple Tournament at Sacred Heart.  St. Francis opened with local rival North Oldham in the first round of pool play.  The Wyverns went on to defeat the Mustangs 1-0 in their toughest pool match of the tournament.

Goals - Milliken; Saves - McClain (25)

Tuesday night the Wyverns faced off against another familiar opponent in Butler.  It was an easy night as the Wyvern cruised to victory 9-0.  Then on Wednesday St. Francis handily defeated Seneca 6-0.  The Wyverns won their pool and were an automatic qualifier for the semi-finals.  At that point the Wyverns stingy defense hadn't given up a point.

Thursday nights semi-final was one for the ages as both teams we scoreless for the first 50 minutes of play.  The Wyverns defense was stiff but Atherton found a way to net a goal with 10 minutes remaining.  St. Francis continued to fight but could not even the score and fell 0-1.
